An infant has wrinkly skin and a protective covering called vernix that naturally sheds off during the first week. There’s no need to rush it, rub it, or treat it with lotions or creams. Incase baby is born past the due date, the baby has most likely completed this process naturally inside the mother’s womb.
With newborn skin care, the adage is “less is more.” Below are tips to help protect your baby from developing allergies and rashes:
Avoid bathing your baby frequently: Bathing your baby more than three times per week during the first year dries up natural oils that protect baby’s skin. This leave baby’s skin vulnerable and dry. It may also aggravate eczema. Use pH balanced soaps having good moisturizing content like naughty baby soap to wash your baby.
Apply the soap first on your hand lather the same and then apply this lather on baby’s skin. Wipe off the soap lather with soft cloth and then rinse the baby with lucid warm water.
Except for drool and diaper changes, newborns don’t get very dirty. Babies don’t sweat 9 to 5 and For the first month or so, a sponge bath two or three times a week will keep your baby safely clean. In between, simply clean baby’s mouth and diaper area with a little water or naughty baby cleanser.
Once-a-week sponge baths (or even less) are best for newborns with the cord still attached.
Avoid using scented baby products in the early months: This can irritate your baby’s delicate skin.
